About the amount
Up to $20,000 of eligible renovation expenses can be claimed per year. Where more than one qualifying person lives in the home, that $20,000 is the total for the dwelling, not per person. Financing costs and work done mainly to raise the property's value do not count.
What to know
Qualifying work includes grab bars, wheelchair ramps, walk-in tubs and lowered counters. The credit is claimed on your tax return, so keep every invoice. You need the contractor's GST/HST number and a clear description of the work.
Documents you'll likely need
- Contractor invoices showing GST/HST registration number
- Proof of payment
- Description of the accessibility work performed
