Operating a business in Ontario involves navigating various economic challenges and growth objectives, and several support initiatives exist to help businesses invest, innovate, and expand. This guide covers programs available to assist with trade disruptions, manufacturing investments, and sector-specific quality assurance systems.
Ontario Together Trade Fund
This initiative offers grants or loans to help for-profit businesses in Ontario address the impacts of U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions. The program is designed for small and medium enterprises seeking to make near-term investments to enhance resilience, build local supply chains, and expand market reach into interprovincial and new markets. Intake is continuous with no fixed deadline.
Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit and the Expanded Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit
This program provides corporate income tax credits to support eligible investments in buildings, machinery, and equipment used for manufacturing or processing in Ontario. It is for Canadian-controlled private corporations and other corporations carrying on business in the province to help lower costs and increase competitiveness. The initiative includes both a refundable credit for Canadian-controlled private corporations and a non-refundable version for other corporations.
AgriAssurance Program - Kosher and Halal Investment Component
This contribution funding program supports eligible not-for-profit organizations and for-profit organizations operating in the Canadian kosher and halal red meat sector, specifically concerning beef and veal. It helps recipients develop and integrate quality assurance systems and specialized guidance documentation for slaughter practices. The application deadline is September 30, 2027, unless funding is fully committed sooner, and the program concludes on March 31, 2028.
Which one fits
Choosing the right option depends on the primary activity and sector of the operation. Businesses facing challenges from U.S. tariffs and looking to re-shore supply chains or diversify sales can look to the Ontario Together Trade Fund. This option specifically targets for-profit entities making operational pivots or investments to secure jobs within Ontario.
Manufacturing operations purchasing new physical assets like machinery, equipment, or buildings will find relevance in the Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit and the Expanded Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit. This choice focuses strictly on tax support for corporate income related to provincial manufacturing and processing activities, accommodating both Canadian-controlled private corporations and other corporate structures.
Entities working exclusively within the Canadian kosher and halal red meat sector—specifically beef and veal—are suited for the AgriAssurance Program - Kosher and Halal Investment Component. This funding is directed toward organizational initiatives that build quality assurance systems, develop specialized guidance documentation, and address market demands or consumer concerns.
